Kristen Martell Announces Forthcoming Record with New Single ‘SHOULD I RUN’

Opening with the familiar gentle sound of Kristen’s warm acoustic guitar, ‘Should I Run’ soars into orchestral folk pop territory with lush vocal layers, dynamic arrangements and driving percussion. It’s a bold new track that offers us a glimpse of what is to come from the continued collaborative effort with acclaimed songwriter turned Producer/Engineer Gabrielle Papillon and Dan Ledwell.

‘Should I Run’ chronicles the artist's internal struggle with dissociating in times of stress and conflict. ‘I wrote the song during a time when I started to become conscious of my habit of zoning out’ states Martell. ‘At some point in my life I learned it was easier to hide and numb my emotions than to speak up and be heard. It’s a common trauma response and I’m only now starting to uncover how it has influenced all aspects of my life’.

‘Should I Run’ is for anyone who has trouble speaking their needs. It’s for anyone who has learned to shrink in the face of adversity. It’s for those whose voices have not been heard. It’s for the recovering people-pleasers. It’s a reminder to stand still through the discomfort, for only then can a new outlook begin to unfold.

lyrics

Lyrics:

You know it’s time to turn the lights down low and take it slow.
When resentment dances on our lips and graces our skin.
With words thick as smoke and soft like ash, we choke in vain.
Unwanted visitors, our contempt brings only pain.

Should I run or should I hide. Take cover.
I cannot decide.
Should I run.
I cannot decide.

Up around the bend of good intentions.
Open skies and golden rays pour down again.
But it’s not long before we see the enemy.
In the distance they have their eyes on me.

Should I run or should I hide. Take cover.
I cannot decide.
Should I run.
I cannot decide.

Bridge
Maybe the answers found in standing still

Should I run or should I hide. Take cover.
I cannot decide.
Should I run.
I cannot decide.
